Cowgirl Moon, Oil, 12x12

In between snow days, icy roads, freezing water pipes and a new litter of puppies, I have been spending time at the easel.

I am exploring new materials and approaches and the painting above is the result of some scraping, digging and excavating in paint. This resembles (in my way of thinking) sculpting with paint and is an exciting adventure in shape and color.

“Cowgirl Moon” started in a very abstracted way. As I applied more paint, then pulled some back and even let some passes dry to scrape away (the retro patterned jeans), this wonderful red headed cowgirl started to appear. This method of painting is so exciting to me and the tools are so different that I never know quite what to expect in the process.

The painting “First Rodeo” that I showed you earlier (see below) is similar in style and theme. Which brings me to a question. Will all of my “cloud paintings” have this Western flair? Hmmm....it will be fun to see what appears next.
